About This Site
Hi, my name is Elise Matos and I am passionate about wildlife rehabilitation and the conservation of endangered species. I've been a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for only a couple years. Throughout that time, I realized that I didn't have the best skill at identifying endangered species, especially the ones native to where is live, Long Island New York. I have made this website as a tool to help both myself and other wildlife rehabbers identify endangered species. Not only will this site cover the species of Long Island but all of the endangered species, found in New York.
In this site, you will find the descriptions and helpful images of the endangered species that live in each region of New York. In addition, you will find a link to a map where anyone can provide the location of a wild animal rescued and where it was brought. This mapping system will help keep track of who or what organizations are caring for endangered animals and where they were found. I have included the contact information of the special licensing unit, of the NYDEC, where rehabilitators report their endangered animal findings. Lastly, there is a list of incredibly useful field guides that I and many other wildlife rehabbers recommend to help with further identification.

Here is the link to a map that shows the location of any animal rescued and locations of wildlife rehabilitation centers. The purpose of the map is to identify where an endangered animal was rescued and which rehab facility it was or can be taken to. In order to use the map, please click the link and read the instructions located on the top left side of the page.

Peterson Field Guides
The Peterson Field guide series is a vast catalog of all wildlife including both flora and fauna. These books have really amazing descriptions of animals as well as detailed images depicting each creature. these books range from as general as field guide to mammals to as specific as just a field guide to Hawks. It is highly recommend that Rehabbers invest in a vast collection of these field guides.
Princeton Field Guides: Mammals of North America
This really fantastic field guide has well detailed images of the mammals in the book. In addition, unlike the Peterson field guides, the images are on the same page as the animal description.
Wildlife Rehabilitation Study Guide
To those new to wildlife rehabilitation or are potential wildlife rehabbers, this is the official study guide, that you should read, in order to take and pass the wildlife rehabilitation exam.
